Update: We reached out to the Westminster City Council, which told us they were “inundated with complaints from residents about guests at the Chancery Rosewood hotel, on the site of the former US Embassy in Grosvenor Square, parking their vehicles illegally on the footway outside the hotel.”

They also included a quote from Councillor Max Sullivan, Cabinet Member for Streets, who said “Those on foot shouldn’t have to run a gauntlet of illegally and selfishly parked supercars when trying to walk around Westminster. That’s why we’ve used our relocation vehicle to physically move these cars out of the way. We will not tolerate dangerous pavement parking, whether it’s a Lime bike or a Lamborghini.”

London has become a mecca for wealthy foreigners, but some of them don’t follow the rules. This has infuriated locals and sparked a number of high-profile crackdowns on drivers behaving badly.

Last summer, more than 60 cars were seized as part of a joint effort by the Metropolitan Police, Motor Insurance Bureau, and Westminster City Council. The vehicles were valued at £6 ($8) million and included models from Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren.

Fast forward to today and the Westminster City Council isn’t backing down as they’ve launched a crackdown on illegally parked cars near the fancy Chancery Rosewood hotel. Stays start around £1,280 ($1,708) and can climb to £17,670 ($23,580) or more – depending on the night.

Needless to say, the hotel attracts high-end customers and they’re not particularly picky about where they park. This has been causing issues and officials have had enough.

According to the Daily Mail, a Rolls-Royce registered in Saudi Arabia was recently towed away as part of the crackdown. The Phantom Coupe was apparently one of several luxury vehicles parked on the sidewalk.

While specifics are hazy, offending models reportedly included a Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Mercedes G-Class. Several of these reportedly had Saudi plates and they were joined by a classic Jaguar E-Type. That’s quite a collection and BBC News reports the Rolls-Royce was dropped several streets away, while other owners moved their cars.

A Big Problem

Authorities said they had to take drastic action as “The vehicles are foreign registered, so the chances of recovering the costs are virtually nil.” If that wasn’t bad enough, a spokesperson for the council said the owners are “so wealthy that fines barely register.”

This means they can effectively break the rules without much care. While the recent action amounted to little more than a slap on the wrist, the story is likely far from over.
