- A semi driver was left dangling over the side of a bridge for hours.
- He was eventually rescued by a firefighter who was lowered into place.
- The semi’s load of bricks prevented the whole thing from going over.
A daring rescue recently unfolded on US Route 35 in Mason County, West Virginia. According to authorities, a semi lost control and ended up with its cab hanging over a bridge.

This had to be terrifying for the driver as the Saint Albans Fire Department said the cab was hanging approximately 100 feet (30 meters) above the ground. Thankfully, multiple departments responded and were able to pull off an amazing rescue.

While officials have not released many details, WOWK reported the semi hit a concrete barrier at around 5 am on Tuesday. This apparently sent the cab over the edge of the bridge, but a heavy load of bricks prevented the whole rig from going over.
Rescue teams initially put a strap around the cab by going through the side windows. This appears to have secured the vehicle enough that they could attempt to extract the driver.
As you can see in the video, a firefighter was secured to the ladder of a truck and slowly lowered down to the cab. He then got inside and secured himself to the driver. The two were then carefully lifted to safety.
The driver spent five and a half hours hanging over the side of the bridge and escaped unharmed.
That’s pretty remarkable and Point Pleasant fire chief Jeremy Bryant told the station, “We’ve had a couple of trucks go over this bridge, but this is the first time that we’ve ever had one suspended in the air with no real way to get to him other than rappelling.”
